The Fort Bend Community Prevention Coalition is hosting a virtual town hall event on underage drinking April 29 at 2 p.m.

The event, which will take place over Zoom, will bring together local experts, city officials, law enforcement agents and medical professionals for a discussion about how underage drinking affects the community.

The virtual event will also feature FBCPC’s mock teen bedroom, which shows parents and guardians where kids may be hiding alcohol and other illegal substances.

"We’ll demonstrate how students can hide alcohol in plain sight in their bedrooms, backpacks, and lockers; discuss what law enforcement is seeing in the community; and discuss what we and our local officials can do to address youth substance abuse and prevent misuse and addiction," an email from event organizers says.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence declares April as alcohol awareness month. And according to an email from FBCPC encouraging event registration, 10% of high school students in Fort Bend County regularly consume alcohol.

FBCPC is a program of the Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse Inc. and aims to reduce the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs by youth in the area, according to its website.

Members of the public can register for the free event here. Once an individual registers, he or she will be sent information on how to submit questions and join the Zoom call.
