A train derailment this afternoon just west of Sugar Land has caused damage to several railroad crossings between Main Street and Easton Avenue along Hwy. 90A within city limits.

No injuries or overturned train cars have been reported, and Union Pacific Corp. workers estimate the crossings will remain closed for an extended period of time, according to the alert from the city. Motorists are urged to avoid these crossings.

As the train was traveling, a couple of its wheels on one car got off track west of Main Street, causing extensive damage to concrete and railroad ties in its path, the alert said.
