The Texas Transportation Commission this week approved $1.32 billion for transportation projects in Houston, including a major redesign and rebuild of Interstate 45 near downtown, a source of frustration for many commuters.

The plans call for rerouting I-45 from the west side of downtown Houston to the east side, eliminating the diamond-shaped tangle of concrete formed by the crisscrossing and mingling of I-45, I-69 and I-10 around the city’s central business district.

At a panel discussion in 2015 Houston real estate executives called for that western stretch of I-45, known as the Pierce Elevated, to be demolished, calling it a barrier to further real estate development.

In addition to plans for I-45, Hwy. 59—another major source of bottlenecks and headaches for commuters to and from Fort Bend County—would be rebuilt from Midtown to I-45.

Work is not scheduled to begin until 2020.

In addition to funding the Houston projects, the commission approved over $7.5 billion more for other transportation projects around the state.
