After completing her adult neurology residency at St. Louis University, Dr. Jontel Pierce decided to forgo the usual route of joining a practice and opened her own instead.

Pierce first opened her practice, Mind Neurology Clinic, in Sugar Land in 2018. In April, she opened an office in Katy. The desire to open her own practice came from wanting to have autonomy and control over every aspect of the business, she said.

“I enjoy being able to be a business person and making my own decisions about how I want the business to move forward, how I want to have my atmosphere and culture of my clinic to be,” Pierce said. “Most importantly, I have children and families, so most of the time my schedule is pretty flexible.”

Pierce treats various neurological disorders while specializing in headache disorders and concussions. Some of the most common disorders that she sees include epilepsy, seizures, migraines and dementia.

A typical appointment consists of a patient getting their vitals checked, going over their medical history and then receiving a medical exam.

Sometimes, Pierce will request additional testing, such as an MRI scan or an electroencephalogram, known as a EEG, which measures electrical activity in the brain.

“If it’s something more complex, like new onset seizures or weakness, then we have to order additional testing. ... And then we’ll go from there. So we’ll see what the testing shows, and then we’ll have to follow up and discuss those results and come to a diagnosis and treatment,” Pierce said.

Pierce said what separates her neurology clinic from others is that her staff treats patients like family. She said she also tries to be very accessible to her patients and even has a unique portal system that directly contacts her.

In the future, Pierce plans on practicing more over at the Katy office.

Pierce said she wants patients to realize headaches and migraines do not have to be a daily experience and that there are treatment options available.

“We do have treatment for you that can help you function better in your life and live a more fruitful life,” Pierce said.
