Missouri City could purchase 20 acres on Texas Parkway to develop a mixed-use site and create a downtown.

The overview

At a March 11 meeting, Fort Bend County commissioners approved a joint resolution supporting Missouri City purchasing land from Houston Community College for the mixed-use project.

The site is “essential” for elected officials to begin development of public infrastructure such as streets, drainage, water and electric utilities, according to agenda documents.

Questions about where on HCC’s campus the property is located weren’t returned by press time, but the Southwest campus is at 1600 Texas Parkway, Missouri City.

Zooming in

The proposed mixed-use project, dubbed Downtown Missouri City, comes from residents’ requests for city officials to address the lack of quality restaurants, entertainment options and retail options in the city, according to agenda documents.

Per agenda documents, the project would include a:
  • Walkable retail center
  • Public park
  • Series of single-family townhomes
  • Mid-rise multifamily development
  • Parking garage
The context

The property is located on Texas Parkway, home to City Hall, the Fort Bend County Libraries Missouri City branch, several schools and a fire station, according to agenda documents.

Since 2021, the city has prioritized redeveloping the Texas Parkway and Cartwright Road corridors with a $1.5 million investment for business facade improvements, Community Impact reported. Additionally, the city launched the Restaurant Inventive Program in 2022 to attract local and national eateries to the area.

Looking ahead

Missouri City City Council will need to approve the joint resolution in support of purchasing the HCC land at a future meeting, according to agenda documents.

Community Impact reached out to Missouri City officials to learn more about the project, its cost and a timeline, but the information wasn’t returned by press time.
