Fort Bend County boarding home operators have new regulations they must follow to protect residents.

The big picture

At a Feb. 11 meeting, Fort Bend County commissioners approved an amendment to the county’s boarding home regulations to add a background check requirement for facility owners and operators.

The new regulations are designed to protect the boarding home residents from abuse, neglect, fraud and exploitation, according to agenda documents.

Digging in

A boarding home is defined as an establishment that furnishes, in one or more buildings, lodging to three or more people with disabilities or elderly persons that are unrelated to the owner of the establishment, according to agenda documents.

The facilities provide residents services such as:
  • Grocery shopping and community meals
  • Light housework and laundry
  • Transportation
  • Money management
  • Assistance with self-administration of medication
The initial regulations were adopted in October 2021, according to agenda documents.

Looking ahead

The new regulations will become effective Feb. 14, according to agenda documents.
