Sugar Land’s Park at the Levee will undergo improvements such as new recreational facilities due to a partnership between the city and a local levee improvement district, or LID.

What happened

On Oct. 15, Sugar Land City Council voted unanimously to enter an interlocal agreement with Fort Bend County LID No. 10 to fund improvements for the city’s Park at the Levee.

Under the agreement, the district will fund and construct park infrastructure, such as parking facilities, walkways, picnic areas, shade structures, two pickleball courts, a bocce ball court and a racquetball court, according to agenda documents.

The district will be responsible for all of the construction costs, while the city will provide approval for the design and maintain the infrastructure once it is built, according to agenda documents.

Quote of note

“The residents are really excited about this,” council member Naushad Kermally said. “This has been ongoing for nine years, [and] I’ve been involved with it for about five years, ... so I’d like to make a motion to approve this.”

The background

The 3-acre park is located in the Enclave at RiverPark subdivision but was annexed by the city in 2009, said William Hajdik, assistant director of Parks and Recreation.

Officials with LID No. 10, which maintains land in the subdivision, approached city staff with a proposal to improve the undeveloped parkland in exchange for the city’s commitment to make improvements, according to agenda documents.
