Sugar Land residents could see an increase in water, wastewater and trash service rates next year.

The overview

At a Sept. 4 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to increase water, wastewater and trash rates to account for rising costs.

The rates are adjusted annually based on the fluctuating consumer price index, which is a measure of the average change in prices, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Digging in

Residents can expect an increase of $3.10 to their utility bill bringing the average cost to $104.25, Interim Director of Budget Lauren Fehr said. The average is based on a usage of 10,000 gallons.

Additionally, residential trash will see a $1.04 monthly increase from $20.84 to $21.88, Fehr said.
Looking ahead

A second reading of the ordinance will be heard at the Sept. 17 City Council meeting, Fehr said.

If approved, the updated fees will go into effect on Jan. 1, she said.
