A Missouri City golf course and its City Centre will see layoffs as recovery from Hurricane Beryl continues.

In a nutshell

At an Aug. 19 Missouri City Recreation and Leisure Local Government Corp. meeting, City Council voted to allow the chief administrative officer to execute layoffs for 35 to 40 employees at Quail Valley Golf Course and City Centre, a multipurpose building.

The layoffs come after Beryl caused $2.18 million in damages to city facilities. The hurricane caused the most damage to City Centre, including a 10-day power outage causing mold issues since it was not able to be dried out, Deputy City Manager Sedrick Cole said at an Aug. 5 City Council meeting.

Breaking it down

Management is working to provide staff with notice of the layoffs and supplying opportunities for employees to learn about unemployment resources from the Texas Workforce Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials said.

The layoffs are expected to affect up to 40 of the Quail Valley Golf Course and City Centre’s approximate 100 employees, said Donnie Hayes, Missouri City director of parks and recreation.

What else?

With the complete closure of City Centre, many employees have been cross trained for other roles including the golf cart barn, the golf supply ProShop and debris removal crews, Hayes said.

“We are really trying to keep a core group of staff so when we are able to reopen, we can open up with the staff that have the skills and abilities to help us get back on the right foot,” he said.

Looking ahead

The timeframe for the repair ranges from six months to 18 months depending on the direction City Council determines is best for the building, City Manager Angel Jones said.

“Right now we are at a pivotal point where we are looking at either ... restoring the facility back to status quo or do we explore an option to expand the capacity,” she said.
