The city of Sugar Land is in the final stages of becoming a certified music-friendly city.

The overview

At an Aug. 20 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved the second reading of an ordinance to create a music advisory board to promote the city’s music industry.

The board is part of the city’s larger initiative to join the Texas Music Office’s Music Friendly Texas Certified Community Program, which aims to support the commercial music ecosystem across the state by providing a network of like-minded communities, according to the program’s website.

The first reading for the board's creation was approved at an Aug. 6 meeting.

Council also voted to approve the following board members for a two-year term:
  • Eric Estrada, director of Sofar Houston
  • Mark Winters, rock musician
  • Sam Asthana, classical musician
  • Jalen Baker, jazz musician
Additionally, Sugar Land Civic Arts Coordinator Ebony McFarland will serve as the city representative.

What’s next

Following board appointments, the city will now begin its 30-day review period before its final certification as a music-friendly city, according to agenda documents.


The plans to celebrate its certification on Oct. 26 at its rescheduled Summer of Sound concert, Sha Davis, Sugar Land Civic Arts manager, said at the Aug. 6 meeting.
