Since its founding in 1946, Wharton County Junior College has continued to build on its mission of helping students reach their goals, growing from approximately 200 students to 7,000.
The junior college currently spans four campuses and offers more than 40 programs, but when classes first started, the college didn’t own permanent facilities.
The early days
In September 1946, Wharton County Junior College used five Wharton Fairground buildings to begin its inaugural classes, according to a Jan. 9 news release. It wasn’t until two years later that the college received its first permanent campus after county voters approved a tax bond to build new facilities.
The facility was constructed on a 20-acre lot at Boling Highway and Alabama Road in Wharton, where the college’s original campus still stands.
Wharton County Junior College President Amanda Allen said the college is poised to build upon its great heritage as it looks to a promising future.
“For eight decades, [the college] has been a place of opportunity, access and transformation, shaped by the dedication of our faculty and staff, who care deeply about students and the communities we serve,” Allen said via the news release. “As we honor that legacy, we also look ahead to the next chapter of growth, innovation and impact.”

Looking ahead
To prepare for its 80th anniversary in September, the college has prepared a lineup of events to celebrate throughout the year.
In February, it will hold an employee banquet, followed by a baseball game and tailgate party in March. As for April, a band concert and community reception will take place, with commencement exercises in May.
Finally, the community celebrations will conclude with a special volleyball game in September and National Night Out and Trunk or Treat events in October.
