Fort Bend ISD staff said they hope to receive reimbursement for the millions of dollars in damages district facilities received from Hurricane Beryl in July.

In a nutshell

At the Sept. 9 board agenda review meeting, FBISD Chief Financial Officer Bryan Guinn said initial estimates show hurricane-related damages and cleanup efforts will cost $5.61 million. So far, the district has spent about $764,109, according to agenda documents.

What happened

The district’s insurance company estimates it will cost $3.5 million to repair the roof and interior of the district’s administration building, located at 16431 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land, Guinn said.

High wind from Beryl peeled back the building’s roof, exposing the structure’s third floor to water damage, Chief Operations Officer Damian Viltz said in a July interview.

Environmental testing on the facility was completed, and there’s no air quality issues from the water damage, Guinn said.

What’s next

FBISD staff filed insurance claims and hope to receive up to 90% reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for some repairs, Guinn said. However, it can take years to receive FEMA funding.

“Although we’re pursuing that, we don’t expect immediate relief from FEMA,” he said.
