Texas State Technical College students will have access to an expanded food pantry when it opens on campus this spring.

In a nutshell

Through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank, the Rosenberg technical college can support students experiencing food insecurity, said TSTC Communication Specialist Isaac Dayley. The food bank has been visiting the campus since December to bring boxed meals and goods until the expanded food pantry can open, he said.

Quote of note

“College can be expensive, and for a lot of the students, food insecurity and finances can be a big challenge towards gaining an education,” Dayley said. “Having a food pantry helps break down a couple of those barriers that might otherwise prevent the students from being able to attend college in the first place or focus on their classes and education while they are there.”

The backstory

The college’s partnership with the Houston Food Bank began in December and was made possible through the nonprofit’s Change Food Scholarship, according to a TSTC news release.

The partnership spurred after a focus group study conducted by TSTC’s Advocacy and Resource Center showed students said food insecurity was one of the more significant barriers to their academic success.

The details

The free pantry—which will be in the college’s Industrial Technology Center building—will offer boxed meals, canned food, fresh produce, frozen meats and dried goods, Dayley said.
