FBISD Director of Strategic Communications Sherry Williams said a pep rally was held Jan. 26 in the Sugar Land school’s auditorium and included cheerleaders, bands and football teams from Clements High, Elkins High and Fort Settlement Middle schools. Along with the student body of the school, school and district leaders and parents joined.
The big picture
Children at Risk is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and advocacy organization focused on addressing the root causes of social problems impacting Texas children through research, education, advocacy and public policy. By providing this information to parents and educators, the group hopes to encourage greater accountability and transparency in the education system, according to the website.
Children at Risk evaluated 1,311 Greater Houston-area public schools by the following criteria:
- Student Achievement: How students do on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness
- Campus Performance: How a school compares in test scores to schools with similar levels of poverty
- Student Growth: How students improve their STAAR scores in a school year
- College Readiness: How many high school students are graduating on time and participating in other college-readiness activities
Children at Risk President and CEO Robert Sanborn announced the results for the top five high, middle and elementary schools in the Greater Houston area during a Jan. 22 news conference, according to a news release from FBISD.
“Every year for the last 19 years we do school rankings all over the state of Texas,” Sanborn said. “We look at data for every single public school in the state of Texas and look at who is doing well.”
Sanborn explained in a statement on the website that despite financial challenges, local communities, educators and students have demonstrated resilience by finding creative solutions to resource limitations to maintain their commitment to quality education.
