Citing a need to address overpopulation at several of its campuses, the Fort Bend ISD board of trustees approved a contract to relocate, install, and repair 15 portable classrooms across its district.

Based on the projected enrollment from the district’s demographic firm, Population and Survey Analysts, FBISD may see anywhere from a 0.85%-3.26% increase in its student population for the upcoming school year. That means an increase to between 78,314-80,183 students from the October 2021 enrollment of 77,651 students, according to the demographic firm’s data.

With a 6-1 vote during its March 28 meeting, the board of trustees approved a job order contract with construction company J.R. Thomas Group Inc. to relocate, set up and repair portable classrooms across several FBISD campuses, including Heritage Rose Elementary School, Ridgemont Early Literacy Center, Bowie Middle School and Travis High School. A full list of the affected campuses can be found here.

Molina Walker Almaguer Architects, meanwhile, was approved for any design services the district will need, according to March 29 agenda documents.

The total budget for the portable classrooms, including design services, construction, site development, technology, and any furniture and fixture costs, is approximately $3.1 million. To pay for the classroom costs, the board additionally approved in a 6-1 vote to use 2018 bond program contingency funds. The cumulative total of those funds as of Feb. 28 was $5.63 million.

The board’s late March approval of the classrooms is designed to ensure the buildings are ready for use by August, according to agenda documents.
