After a demolition and construction process that began in June 2020, Fort Bend ISD’s Lakeview Elementary School, 314 Lakeview Drive, Sugar Land, has reopened for students.

The school held an opening celebration March 21 for students returning from spring break, the district said in an email to Community Impact Newspaper.

The original opening date for the new school was in January, but the building ended up being ready the week of March 7, the district said.

The new building remains on the same site as the former school, which opened in 1918 after Imperial Sugar identified a need for its workers’ children to have a school conveniently located in the community, according to the district.

Enrollment remains on par with the old building at 310 students, though the new school has a capacity of 450, the school district said.

The cost of the demolition and construction was $34.56 million and was rebuilt using dollars approved by voters from the $992.6 million 2018 bond program.

The new Lakeview Elementary maintains historic elements of the previous building while incorporating 21st century technology features, such as a split-level design, outdoor learning spaces, colorful interior spaces to promote student creativity and hands-on learning along with more windows to allow in more natural light, according to the district.
