Grocery company H-E-B selected Fort Bend ISD as a finalist for its 2018 Excellence in Education Awards program in a Monday press release. FBISD was chosen as one of five school districts in the large school district category and will receive $5,000 in award funding, according to the announcement. Finalists in different categories—including small school districts, early childhood education facilities and public school boards—will compete to win greater recognition and award funding, the release stated. A panel of judges will visit each selected district, facility and school board, touring campuses and talking with administration, staff, parents and other community members to determine overall winners. “We are extremely proud to be honored by H-E-B again this year, as this is a testament to the outstanding work of our collective Fort Bend ISD community,” FBISD Superintendent Charles Dupre said in an online statement. “Great things are happening in FBISD, and this recognition speaks highly to the commitment and overwhelming support that our students, staff and community have shown as we work to prepare our graduates for futures beyond what they can imagine.” H-E-B previously named the FBSID board of trustees as the Board of the Year in 2017, awarding the district with $30,000 total. The trustees voted Monday to invest the $30,000 in the board’s professional development and in leadership development training programs for students in elementary, middle and high schools. No discussion has taken place regarding potential uses for the additional $5,000, FBISD spokesperson Amanda Bubela said. The 2018 winners will be announced at the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony May 5 at the Marriott Marquis in Houston, and the winning large school district will receive $100,000.
