A survey of Texas public school superintendent salaries shows that Fort Bend Independent School District is paying its superintendent slightly more than leaders of other large school districts.
FBISD Superintendent Charles Dupre earns a base salary of $315,000, according to the district. The district had 74,219 students enrolled as of Nov. 7, which puts Dupre above the average base pay for superintendents at districts with over 50,000 students—$308,184 for the 2016-17 school year— according to the survey by the Texas Association of School Boards.
In comparison, the average salary for superintendents at school districts with fewer than 500 students is about $95,000 for the current school year.
Dupre became FBISD superintendent in 2013, at a base salary of $285,000. He has received two raises since being hired, first in 2014 when his pay was increased to $299,250. The most recent raise was approved by the FBISD board of trustees Oct. 17, and constituted an increase of about 5.3 percent, according to the district.
The board also also extended Dupre’s contract until 2020.
Among those Texas superintendents who received a pay increase, the average raise was 3.2 percent, up from an average increase of 2.9 percent for the 2015-16 academic year. Dupre was one of nearly 70 percent of returning superintendents who received a salary increase for the 2016-17 academic year, according to the survey.
“Given the fact that Dr. Dupre is recognized as an excellent superintendent, has made significant progress addressing priorities and areas of concern identified by the board, and was given no raise last year, we determined that raising his salary to $315,000 was justified,” said Kristin Tassin, president of the board of trustees.
In addition to base salaries, superintendents usually receive additional perks, such as insurance, paid travel and contributions to retirement accounts. Dupre recevied a $1,500 increase to the annual payment to a tax-free annuity retirement account, according to FBISD.
