Some Sugar Land retail center owners will have the opportunity to receive funding assistance in 2025 with the launch of the city’s Commercial Revitalization Grant Program.

The overview

The program will provide property owners of multitenant properties with at least 15,000 square feet of leasable space and that are 20 years old with up to 20% reimbursement for revitalization projects, according to a Sept. 25 news release. The $500,000 pilot program was approved Sept. 18 by the Sugar Land 4B Corp.

The details

According to the release, proposals should accomplish development outcomes by:
  • Modernizing building facades
  • Creating public spaces
  • Promoting walkability
  • Enhancing parking infrastructure
  • Stimulating economic impact
  • Innovating with transformative public projects
The projects must accomplish two or more development outcomes, such as facade, pedestrian, parking lot or public art improvements.

In their own words

"As Sugar Land approaches build-out, this program provides a unique opportunity to redefine the city," Assistant Director of Redevelopment Jessica Huble said in the release. "By strategically redeveloping and investing in the commercial centers and public spaces, Sugar Land can not only maintain our high quality of life but also create a more vibrant, attractive and sustainable community that will continue to thrive for years to come."

Looking ahead

Outreach for the program is expected to begin in October with applications opening by January, according to the release.
