Note: New stories on Fort Bend County coronavirus case information will be posted daily or as new information becomes available.

After only reporting nine new cases the day prior, Fort Bend County is reporting 62 new cases of the coronavirus, according to data released April 22.

This brings the total case count in the county—which includes active cases, recoveries and deaths—to 870. Of the 748 active cases in the county, 68 patients are hospitalized, while the remaining 680 are recovering at home.

The county reports that 104 people have recovered from the virus, up seven from the number reported yesterday. Additionally, 18 people have died from the virus, according to county data.

Fort Bend County has performed 1,825 coronavirus tests at its county-run site. However, this is not the only location in Fort Bend County or the Houston area where residents can receive testing.

Race and ethnicity information

In an April 21 press release, Fort Bend County Health and Human Services released information about how the county is tracking coronavirus patients’ race and ethnicity, data the county recently began releasing.

The county’s health department is working backward to collect race and ethnicity information for previously reported cases, according to the release.

“I am committed to transparency, and that means releasing data about the novel coronavirus cases accurately and quickly,” Fort Bend County Judge KP George said in the release.

As of April 22, 34% of people with confirmed cases of the coronavirus are black (non-Hispanic), 23% are Hispanic, 21% are Asian (non-Hispanic), 19% are white (non-Hispanic) and 4% are categorized as other. In the release the county says these percentages “will likely never equal 100% of cases because some reports do not include race and ethnicity.”

According to 2018 U.S. Census Bureau data, Fort Bend County as a whole is 32.3% white (non-Hispanic), 24.7% Hispanic, 20.6% Asian (non-Hispanic), and 20.4% black (non-Hispanic). These percentages do not equal 100% because they do not include the percentage of people who identify as two or more races or as races or as ethnicities outside of the four above.

The county reports that of the 18 people who have died from the virus, nine were white, four were Hispanic, three were Asian and two were black.

The county warns in the release that there is a lag in reporting cases, so information reported on a given day may be for older cases.
