The Fort Bend ISD school board voted to authorize the reappraisal of homes and businesses damaged by Hurricane Harvey within the school district, and staff outlined a preliminary timeline for a potential 2018 bond program.

1) Board authorizes reappraisal process

The school board voted to move forward with the process to reappraise up to 4,300 properties damaged by Harvey within the school district.

Residents would be taxed for a reduced value from Aug. 28 to Dec. 31.

Because Fort Bend County, the city of Sugar Land, and Katy ISD have also authorized the reappraisal process, FBISD will share the cost with these taxing entities, according to meeting documents. FBISD will be responsible for approximately $200,000-$250,000.

2) FBISD plans for potential 2018 bond

Staff plans to use a facilities assessment study and building utilization study to assess the school district’s needs, which will help develop a facilities master plan and capital plan.

Using the plans as guidance, the district will identify future projects to include in the 2018 bond program, which may include school construction, classroom additions, and facility improvements, FBISD staff said.

A bond oversight committee will be appointed in December, according to a timeline presented to the board of trustees. The committee will meet five times between December and June to discuss bond details before its potential election in November 2018.

3) Willowridge High School will reopen in early 2018

Students are scheduled to return to Willowridge High School Jan. 8.

Students have been attending Marshall High School since the beginning of the school year after staff discovered in June the high school was significantly affected by mold.
