The owners behind Kazakhstan-based chain Happy Cake opened the first U.S. location in Sugar Land this summer.

On the menu

The business offers cupcakes, cake by the slice and about 30 types of cakes, including customized. The owners use organic ingredients, and all cakes are made by hand, co-owner Saule Soltanova said.

Popular cake flavors include:
  • Cloud Cake, which is vanilla cake layered with special whipped cream frosting from Kazakhstan
  • Emerald Cake, which is a spinach cake with strawberry compote inside
“It doesn’t taste like spinach—it is light, it is delicious,” Soltanova said.

The Sugar Land dessert shop differs from the Kazakhstan locations with its addition of coffee and tea in a coffee shop atmosphere, Soltanova said.

The backstory

Soltanova and her husband, Askhat Soltanov, launched the business in 2013 from the kitchen of their home in Kazakhstan. It has since grown to more than 150 across the country and its border countries, Soltanova said.

“In our country, people love our cakes,” she said. “We say we don’t sell cakes, we sell happiness. ... When the family celebrates something happy in their life, they celebrate with our cakes. It is like association with happiness, happy moments, something good.”

What’s next

The owners plan to expand Happy Cake with 250 franchise locations in the U.S. over the next six years, Soltanova said.
