After owning jewelry stores in New Mexico and Hawaii, Kent and Cay Hutton decided to put down roots in November 2017 and open Hutton’s Jewelry and Gifts in Sugar Land.

Kent opened his first store in Roswell, New Mexico in 1976 and worked with Cay during the holidays.

“She came in and helped me gift wrap,” Kent said. “We got married a couple of months later, and we’ve been partners ever since then.”

Kent and Cay–both Texas natives–partnered with friends Jason and Lisa Brown Lee to open the Sugar Land location.

“We are trying to provide a service,” Kent said. “The [clients] are dealing with the owners. We have unique things. We accommodate and serve people.”

The display boxes hold earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings at various price points. The jewelry store also sells freshwater and south sea pearls.

“We have a silver and tahitian pearl from one of our resources in Honolulu and rare freshwater pearls from Lake Kasumigaura in Japan from an artist in Colorado,” Cay said.

One of the store’s exclusive pieces is the handcrafted, multicolored quartz bracelet with 50 stones. The designer spent five years creating it.

Kent and Cay work with over 10 designers to bring custom pieces to the store.

“We trust our resources to provide us with things that we like and think we can sell and show people,” Cay said.

The store also sells three color grades of rare, fancy yellow diamonds, also known as canary diamonds. Cay looks at each diamond individually and judges it by its characteristics, she said.

Kent inherited his father’s passion for jewelry and worked in the industry growing up, he said.

“It’s something he loved,” Kent said. “I weighed diamonds before I could ride a bicycle.”
