Nonprofit officials gathered April 13 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the Angels Nest Nutrition Center in north Houston.

About the project

According to an April 12 news release, the nutrition center aims to address food insecurity relating to youth in foster care and the community at large. The client-choice food pantry is designed to honor the dietary restrictions and preferences of those served, while offering a sense of dignity and pride. Officials noted monthly food distributions will be made to the nutrition center through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank.

Key players

According to the release, the project is a collaboration between:
  • Angels Nest Inc., a nonprofit that provides supervised independent living to young adults and mothers ages 18-21 who are transitioning out of foster care
  • Mentor Empower Motivate, or M.E.M, a nonprofit that supports the advancement of youth by hosting events to raise money for local charities, raising awareness of community needs and providing resources
  • Winners Circle Group of Texas, an organization that offers programs that empower special needs individuals of all ages and their families to succeed
What they're saying
  • "Our youth enter our programs not knowing how to prepare meals. They rely on Uber Eats and fast food," said Malika Bruno, founder and executive director of Angels Nest, in a statement. "The nutrition center is part of our wellness program to address food insecurity and nutrition education. It will become a training center with a full kitchen, cooking classes and food management training."
  • "It gives people in the community that may not be able to get food an opportunity to come and get food for their families," said Reggie Barnes, co-founder of the Winners Circle Group of Texas, in a statement. "We have so many people that are suffering from lack of food and nutrition, and this particular center, where it's located, will give people in the community an opportunity to come get fresh food because the Houston Food Bank is going to provide us with it."
  • "I'm very excited about the opening of the nutrition center. I think that it will definitely serve as one of the pillars of the community in regard to the quality and education of food, as far as nutrition within the body," said Mack Montgomery Jr., M.E.M founder and Winners Circle Group of Texas co-founder, in a statement. "I'm very excited to be able to partner with Angels Nest to be able to create and follow through on this endeavor."
