Jackie Burke, who opened Champions Golf Club in Spring in 1957 with professional golfer Jimmy Demaret, will be inducted to the Houston Sports Hall of Fame’s 2019 class.

Burke, 95, competed in his first U.S. Open at 18 and won multiple PGA of America Tour events during his career as well as the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship in 1956, Community Impact Newspaper previously reported.

The award marks the 70th anniversary of Burke winning his first professional tournament in 1949, said Patti Smith, public relations director of the Houston Sports Authority, the entity that created the Houston Sports Awards.

“Jackie has been [well-known] not only in Houston for golf, but really his entire golf career has just been legendary,” she said.
