Here are important facts about the referendum and details about some of the projects a successful bond referendum will fund:
1. The referendum carries a 7-cent tax increase, which would raise the SISD tax rate from $1.47 to $1.54 per $100 valuation from 2018-2020. This would mean an annual property tax bill increase of $80.50 for the owner of a house assessed at the district average of $140.068.
2. Included in the referendum is $280 million for facilities, including three ninth-grade school buildings, two middle schools and a new districtwide stadium. Also included are monies for a new police department building, full-day pre-kindergarten instruction and maintenance.
3. The referendum also includes $32 million for technology. This includes improvements to Internet connections throughout the district, new projector systems and a new telephone system.
4. Safety and security improvements make up $18 million worth of the bond referendum, but a large portion of that cost would be for new school buses, to expand busing routes and replace old vehicles. A total of 105 buses are needed, according to the district—60 new buses and 45 replacement buses—with a total price tag of $10.5 million.
5. The remainder of safety and security improvements in the referendum consist of new digital surveillance systems, alarms, access control and other security expenditures.
