The 1960 Hope Center opened in August to provide resources including meals and showers to the homeless and will hold its first fundraiser on Oct. 25.

The idea for the shelter originated at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 14301 Stuebner Airline Road, Spring.

“The task force at St. Dunstan’s chose the FM 1960 corridor for 1960 Hope Center’s location based on its high concentration of people living on the streets,” said Robert Butler, executive director of the center.

The center is open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays and offers showers, meals, laundry service and clothing.

Clients also have access to individual counseling, pastoral care, Alcoholics Anonymous, mentoring, job-search assistance and referrals to other agencies.

It receives financial backing from St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church and through a grant from the Great Commission Foundation and the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, said Debbie Johnson, president of the center’s board of directors.

“As more clients come seeking our help, we want to continue to grow and offer even more services,” Johnson said.

The center will host its first fundraising event from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 25 at Northgate Country Club, 17110 Northgate Forest Drive, Houston.

Sponsorships are available for $250 and more, and individual tickets are $25. Information about the fundraiser can be found at

The center serves about 40 people each day with two full-time employees and a group of volunteers.

The center also works with Harris County Sheriff Department’s Homeless Outreach Team, which helps clients obtain identification.
