On Dec. 12, the U.S. Census Bureau released new five-year data for 2023 as part of its American Community Survey. The new data represents a five-year estimate of the population across the country from 2019 to 2023, according to the bureau website. This data compares with the 2018 survey results, which studied the country from 2014 to 2018.
The following ZIP codes make up Community Impact's Spring and Klein coverage area: 77068, 77069, 77070, 77379, 77388 and 77389.
The details
While the number of residents identifying as Black or African American rose in each of the six Spring- and Klein-area ZIP codes from 2018 to 2023, some areas saw larger shifts than others.
According to bureau data, the number of residents identifying as Black or African American:
- Rose from 2,210 in 2018 to 3,758 in 2023 in ZIP code 77068
- Rose from 4,098 in 2018 to 6,222 in 77069
- Rose from 9,346 in 2018 to 10,833 in 77070
- Rose from 7,538 in 2018 to 9,461 in 77379
- Rose from 5,492 in 2018 to 9,713 in 77388
- Rose from 1,882 in 2018 to 3,167 in 77389
The number of Spring- and Klein-area residents who identify as Hispanic or Latino also saw significant growth during the last five years, rising 31% from 2018 to 2023, and residents identifying as Asian increased by 16% during the same period. Meanwhile, white-identifying residents decreased by 11% from 2018 to 2023.
The Hispanic or Latino resident population in Spring and Klein grew in all ZIP codes, with the most growth in the 77379 ZIP code, spiking from 13,382 in 2018 to 19,654 in 2023, according to bureau data. Asian-identifying residents increased in all six Spring and Klein ZIP codes, except for 77068 where the population fell from 1,148 in 2018 to 761 in 2023.
ZIP code 77389 was the only ZIP code in Spring and Klein to see growth for residents identifying as white, with that demographic’s population rising from 21,367 in 2018 to 23,580 in 2023.
