From April 16-23, property owners in the state of Texas filed 8,120 flood claims totaling more than $43 million in claims paid following the week’s historic rainfall event, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Everyone living in our region is at risk for flooding to varying degrees, and homeowners insurance does not cover flooding,” said Kim Jackson, Harris County Flood Control District public information officer.

Because homeowner insurance policies do not cover flood damage, Congress enacted the National Flood Insurance Program in 1968 in hopes of mitigating the costly effects rising water can impose upon property owners.

“While government agencies, such as the HCFCD, can build projects that reduce flooding risks and damages, residents should do their part and have flood insurance in place,” Jackson said. “Having flood insurance is the best way to financially recover from a flood.”
