Editor's note: This article has been updated to list the correct estimated end date for construction as December 2023.

After years of delays, construction on Lone Star College-University Park’s $21.67 million Visual and Performing Arts Center is underway and slated to be completed by December 2023, according to college officials.

After the project was announced in late 2019, the PAC’s construction was initially delayed in September 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and funds being needed to repair facilities following Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Spikes in material costs and labor shortages continued to delay the project through late 2021, but then construction on the project kicked off May 31.

LSC-UP officials said they do not anticipate any more major delays to construction besides potential inclement weather.

The 30,000-square-foot facility will house an art gallery, a band hall, a 338-seat main stage theater and a 100-seat black box theater upon completion. The facility will also feature art, drama and music classrooms.
