Following 27 years of service with the Klein ISD Police Department, Chief David Kimberly will retire from his post this June. In recognition of his years of service, district officials honored Kimberly at the May 9 board of trustees meeting.

Kimberly first joined the KISD Police Department in 1995 and served in various capacities, including as a patrol officer, campus officer, sergeant and captain, until he was promoted to chief of police in 2014. Prior to joining the KISD Police Department, Kimberly worked for the Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.

Kimberly is the third person to hold the position as KISD Police Department chief; his predecessors, Guadalupe Rocha and Alfred Moore, served from 1999-2014 and from 1982-99, respectively. The KISD Police Department was the first school district police department in Texas, beginning its operations Sept. 1, 1982.

In recognition of Kimberly's years of service, the KISD board of trustees unanimously approved a resolution proclaiming May 9 as Chief David Kimberly Day in Klein. The recognition coincides with National Police Week, which falls on the week of May 15-21 this year.

"Congratulations chief, we are so thankful for your faithful service to Klein ISD," Superintendent Jenny McGown said in a video shown during the meeting. "Every day I get up and I thank God for you and your leadership and for all that you've done to keep our over 7,000 employees and 54,000 students safe each day. You will always have a home here in your Klein family."

State Rep. Sam Harless, R-Spring, who was also in attendance, likewise presented a resolution recognizing Kimberly's service and said a Texas flag was flown over the state Capitol in his honor. Representatives with Boy Scouts of America Sam Houston Area Council also honored Kimberly at the meeting and thanked him for his years of work with the organization.

"This is absolutely bittersweet because when we say 'Klein family,' I truly mean it—they're family," Kimberly said at the meeting. "These kids, this job—it's not a job, this has been the greatest book—you know that book when you get to that last page, and you really don't want to turn it because that means the book is over? That's where I'm at. But I'm happy at the same time because ... I'm ready for the next book."

As of press time May 10, KISD officials had not yet announced who will take over as the district's chief of police following Kimberly's retirement.
