To date, the 2017-18 school year has been fraught with weather-related closures, but the Spring and Klein ISD calendars have not been extended.

KISD and SISD were each closed for more than a week in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in late August, but the Texas Education Commission granted a waiver of 10 days to districts affected by flooding.

However, some winter weather in January raised new questions, as both districts were closed for two days—Jan. 16-17—as a result of icy roads.

In SISD, the district had enough time built into its instructional calendar to absorb those days. The district will also hold classes Feb. 19, a day originally slated for professional development. Officials said this is to give students more classroom time.

KISD is trying a different approach. Instead of making up a day on its Feb. 19 professional development day, it has added a minute of instructional time to each school day beginning Jan. 26.

The school year will end on May 31 for students in each district.
