Restaurant owners Cesar Bautista and Diana Sanchez opened Taste of Mexico in January 2022 after owning a catering business for four years prior to opening the brick and mortar. The restaurant offers traditional authentic Mexican dishes inspired by Sanchez's great-grandmother's recipes.

What’s in a name

Taste of Mexico came about after the catering company's customers requested a place where they could enjoy the couples cooking on a daily basis rather than have to wait for a special occasion, Sanchez said.

“I have had customers in tears say our cooking reminds them of their own late grandmother's cooking,” Bautista said.

Sanchez said her grandmother taught her to cook from an early age following her family’s traditional customs. Today, Sanchez has a multitude of traditional Mexican recipes she shares with the restaurant’s surrounding communities.

“We wanted to offer customers a taste of my own recipes from Mexico,” Sanchez said.

The restaurant is operated by Bautista and Sanchez as well as their two teenage daughters who work part-time in the restaurant.

On the menu

At Taste of Mexico, customers can place orders straight at the counter and try samples prior to selecting their dish.

The menu includes appetizers such as chips and queso, street corn, nachos and street hot dogs as well as street tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, mini tortas, and quesabirria tacos made with slow-cooked beef birria and mozzarella cheese.

Taste of Mexico also offers a menu titled “Grandma’s Recipes,” which include dishes inspired by Sanchez's great-grandmother's recipes. Menu items include:
  • Barbacoa
  • Chicken tinga
  • Red pepper steak
  • Chicharron in green sauce
  • Menudo
The restaurant also offers vegetarian dishes such as tofu fajitas, soy tinga, soy pastor, and cactus and potatoes.

“We want to be inclusive of everyone and try to consider people's dietary needs as much as possible,” Bautista said. “And make sure everyone is fed.”

Taste of Mexico plans to expand its restaurant by extending the dining space with the additional space provided by the business formerly located next door.
