Data released March 17 from the U.S. Census Bureau includes information from its Annual Community Survey five-year estimates for 2016-20, including the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the bureau, the pandemic resulted in disruptions to its data collection, and the bureau revised its methodology to reduce bias occurring as a result of nonresponses in 2020.

The Spring and Klein area is unincorporated, encompassing the ZIP codes 77066, 77068, 77069, 77070, 77090, 77373, 77379, 77388 and 77389. According to the new data released in March, the Spring and Klein area saw an increase in the overall population estimates by 12.13% from 351,339 for 2011-15 to 399,829 for 2016-20.




Median household income data for the area showed four Spring and Klein-area ZIP codes—77066, 77069, 77070 and 77090—were below the 2020 national average of $67,521. However, all ZIP codes for the region showed an increase in median household income except for 77070 and 77069. The average median household income for the Spring and Klein region was about $78,650 for 2016-20 compared to $73,415 for 2011-15.


The median age of local residents increased slightly for a little more than half of the Spring and Klein-area ZIP codes—77066, 77070, 77090, 77373 and 77389—between 2015 and 2020, while it decreased for the remaining ZIP codes—77068, 77069, 77379 and 77388. The average median age overall was 36.1 for 2011-2015 and 35.1 for 2016-2020.


The number of individuals over the age of 25 who have at least a bachelor’s degree grew from 54,445 for 2011-15 to 64,556 for 2016-20, according to the ACS. This represents a 15.66% increase.

Conversely, adults older than 25 with less than a ninth grade education expanded during this same time period by about the same rate—15.36%. This population was 9,968 in 2011-15 and 11,777 in 2016-20.
