Harris County's court case backlog is down by 31,000 cases compared to 2021, District Attorney Kim Ogg's office announced in an April 12 news release.

The past: Harris County has been experiencing a backlog of court cases since courts were shut down in early 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The county has worked to reduce the backlog through initiatives such as:
  • Supporting the creation of six new district courts;
  • Adding more staff to the DA’s office; and
  • Creating a homicide division in 2022. The homicide vision, which is focused on trying “languishing homicide cases," has closed some cases that were pending for up to four years, according to the news release.
The present: As of April 10, the backlog stands at 114,242 cases—down 21% from 2021—per the release.

Quote of note: “These successes lead to more victims getting resolution of their cases and getting that resolution more quickly,” Ogg said in a statement.
