Champion Forest Park, located at Cypresswood Drive and Cutten Road, is almost ready to open, pending some final issues with easements, Harris County Precinct 4 Parks Administrator Dennis Johnston said this week. The 7-acre park should be ready to open in early 2019, he said. It will feature four youth soccer fields, six concrete picnic tables, a restroom, a small playground, a walking trail and parking spaces. Several pipeline and electrical easements remain to be addressed, Johnston said, and a few other hurdles remain to reach the longterm goal of connecting the park with Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve on Chasewood Park Drive through the Cypress Creek Greenway trail system. The design for the additional work is underway, but because it involves navigating railroad crossings, implementing those connections is still several years away, he said. "Nothing gets done overnight in our world," Johnston said. The park consists of several parcels previously acquired by the county. Harris County Flood Control District purchased nearly 2 acres from Braniff Jaehne, LLC, in 2014 for $163,095 as part of its Floodplain Preservation Program, and the remaining acreage of the park was donated by WoodMar, Ltd., in 1981, he said. Precinct 4 is developing the property. Precinct 4 has partnered with several other entities to facilitate water, sewer, and maintenance at the forthcoming park. A partnership with Cy Champ Public Utility District will provide sewer and water connectivity for the restroom at the park, and Precinct 4 is working with Spring Klein Soccer Association to exchange use of the soccer fields for ongoing field maintenance. Editor's note: The name of the park has been corrected to Champion Forest Park.
