After burning down in a fire in June, Liberty Park’s playground has reopened to the public, according to a March 28 news release from Spring ISD.

In a nutshell

After the fire, the Timber Lane Utility District, Harris County Precinct 3 worked with local companies to fundraise to rebuild the playground, according to the release. The park is managed by Harris County Precinct 3 and located across the street from SISD’s Hirsch Elementary.

In December, the playground rebuild was completed, and the space was reopened to the public two months later, according to the release. In late March, a dedication ceremony was held at the park.

“As long as I can remember, Liberty Park has been around,” Drew St Fleur, a 5th-grader at Hirsch Elementary, said in the news release. “When I found out it had burned down, I was devastated, but when I found out it had been rebuilt, I was rebuilt. I love and cherish this park.”

The past

The playground originally opened in 2003 and was built by 900 community volunteers, according to the release. About two decades later, an “unknown suspect” set fire to the playground and grass, Harris County Constables determined.
