Easter is over, Tax Day is here, and several community events are planned in Spring and Klein in the next week. Also, be sure to be prepared for road closures that may affect portions of the area when the Ironman triathlon comes through Spring this coming weekend.

  1. Tax Day is Tuesday. Make sure you are up to date on some things you should know about filing your taxes this year.

  2. The Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce holds two of its monthly meetings this week. The government affairs meeting will be held at the Chamber of Commerce office at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at 3920 FM 1960 W., Houston. Patrick Gant, a Texas Department of Transportation engineer, will discuss the Willowbrook-Cypress Creek Parkway road project. The monthly public safety meeting of the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Champions Emergency Services District, 12730 Champion Forest Drive, Houston. Kristyn Stillwell of HOPE Haven will discuss how her organization is working with a Harris County Sheriff's Office team to move homeless people into permanent housing or employment. www.houstonnwchamber.org

  3. Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Art will host its monthly Drop-in Art Cafe event on Thursday. Author Jim Wilson and designer and artist Tod Gilpin have collaborated on two books,"Paw Tracks Here and Abroad: A Dog’s Tale" and "Churchill and Roosevelt: The Big Sleepover at the White House."   4. When making plans for the upcoming weekend, take into account the Ironman triathlon that will go through portions of Spring. See our guide to road closures in the area this coming weekend and plan accordingly.

  5. About 150 high school students will have access to donated prom dresses through Avanti Senior Living's Blessed by the Dress event. Dress drop-offs can be scheduled at the 24520 Community Center Drive, Spring, location of Avanti Senior Living, through May 1.

  6. Texas residents can purchase certain emergency preparation supplies tax-free April 22-24. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items, and shoppers do not need to issue an exemption certificate, according to a statement from the Texas Comptroller. Qualifying items include portable generators costing less than $3,000; emergency ladders and hurricane shutters costing less than $300; and axes, batteries, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and radios costing less than $75.
