Every April and October, the entrance to Old Town Spring at Main and Gentry streets becomes a marketplace for local Texas wines as well as arts and crafts by Texas residents.
Since the event began 10 years ago, the number of wineries in Texas has grown, and Old Town Spring has become a hub of activity for wine aficionados, with several tasting rooms among the neighborhood's many small local businesses, said event organizer Seth Sanders, the owner of Puffabelly's Old Town Depot Restaurant on Main Street.
Tickets are available for $25 online at the
Main Street Festivals website through midnight on Friday. The price increases to $35 when bought at the door.
A ticket is good for seven wine tastings, a complimentary glass and additional tastings for $1 each.
Every year, several thousand people visit the event, which features about 50 vendors. Artists and craftspeople are among those setting up stands at the festival and will be selling paintings, photography, jewelry and other handmade items.
A wide variety of Texas-made wines will be available, including merlots, chardonnays and area specialties.
"Houston is known for fruity, sweet wines," Sanders said.
The event runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
"I like dealing with the Texas wineries— it's a good group of folks," Sanders said. "They're business owners like myself and we’re all just small businesses trying to make it happen."
