Fort Bend County Commissioners approved an order to call a 2017 mobility bond election for Nov. 7 during a special meeting Wednesday morning at the county courthouse in Richmond.
The bond package includes 63 projects spread across the county for a total $218.5 million. The proposal underwent numerous revisions from the commissioners' original wish list of $500 million.
“I think we did a lot of work to put the bond election together,” Judge Robert Hebert said. “They’ve got [many] roads that are critical for us to do in the next five to seven years.”
An election would have been called during the commissioners court's regularly agenda meeting Tuesday but a special meeting was held in order to comply with a state law that requires bond elections not be called 90 days before election day.
Hebert said that if voters do not support the bond this fall, projects could be postponed for an entire year and inflation would add another $10–12 million to the cost of the projects.
“We can’t get started if the folks don’t support us," Hebert said, describing the package as timely. “They’ve supported us every time in the past.”
