This multiyear traffic signal upgrade program will remove and replace signal control cabinets and detection systems and install new battery backup systems. According to the latest update made to the Pearland Traffic Operations Department by the city’s contractors, the new traffic control cabinets are expected to be delivered by February.
“This will bring 29 of our traffic signals to current standards, replacing outdated and failing equipment,” interim City Manager Trent Epperson said.
Overall, 24 of these cabinets and vehicle detection equipment will be replaced across many of the 29 intersections along the Shadow Creek Parkway, Broadway and Main streets, and McHard and Bailey roads. Signals will be inspected by the city once the work reaches substantial completion.
The project has a total of $2.1 million in funding from certificates of obligation, a method of borrowing money that local governments can use without needing voter approval. The contract awarded to Reliable was $1.56 million.
