Leadership Pearland officials started a petition April 20 to include a local-option election on the November ballot that would allow the sale of all alcohol within Pearland’s city limits.
Laws now require businesses to have a Food and Beverage permit to sell alcohol in the city. To qualify for a Food and Beverage permit an establishment’s food sales must account for more than half of all gross sales, Leadership Pearland officials said.
For the proposition to make the ballot, the petition must be signed by 7,038 residents—35 percent of Pearland voters in the November 2014 election—by June 22. Only registered voters living in Pearland are eligible to sign the petition.
More than 1,000 residents had signed the petition as of May 29, officials said.
Leadership Pearland—a program designed to generate more resident involvement in city affairs—will have members gathering signatures at the city’s Concerts in the Park series every Friday through June at Southdown Park, 2150 Country Place Parkway, Pearland. Residents may also sign the petition from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday at 1506 E. Broadway St., Ste. 201 or at the following locations during regular business hours:
The Law Office of Mark Smith, 1920 Country Place Parkway, Ste. 320, Pearland
Deep South Barrels, 2849 Miller Ranch Road, Ste. 501B, Pearland
Pearland Chamber of Commerce, 6117 W. Broadway St., Pearland
If passed, the law would allow pubs, wine bars and liquor stores in the city. The removal of the existing alcohol sales restrictions would bring more entertainment, commerce and tax revenue to boost Pearland’s economy, group officials said.
