Hundreds of nonprofits and community organizations serve Brazoria and Galveston counties. This is a noncomprehensive list of area organizations in need of volunteers. Here are some ways to get involved and give back to the community this holiday season.

Adult Reading Center taps volunteer tutors to provide instruction to adults with limited literacy skills at no charge. The center needs volunteers to serve as tutors, administrative assistants, event volunteers, computer lab instruction coaches and committee members.

Bay Area Houston Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing. Habitat seeks volunteers who want to work hands-on to give back to their community. Volunteers donate their time and skills to build homes in Galveston County for the less fortunate. In addition to homebuilding, volunteers can help at the office or in the organization’s ReStore shop. Volunteers can also serve on committees.

Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County is part of a national organization that works with youth from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. Volunteers get involved through tutoring sessions, facilities projects and mentorship.

Brazoria County Children’s Alliance offers a variety of opportunities for those looking for volunteer work, including administrative and clerical duties, fundraising, building maintenance and special events. The Alliance for Children assists abused and neglected children by partnering with social service providers in Brazoria County.

Brazoria County Women’s Center was founded in 1982 in an effort to provide services to domestic violence victims. The Women’s Center offers volunteer opportunities at resale shops as well as
a supervised visitation program.

Christian Helping Hands works to aid people in need through the cooperative effort of local churches. The organization runs a pantry and warehouse, sorting donated items and filling orders for clients. City of Friendswood

City of Friendswood offers a variety of volunteer opportunities in order to support citizen participation in the community. In addition toplanning and preservation committees like Keep Friendswood Beautiful, the city is in need of same-day volunteers for events, such as the Fourth of July Festival and Kid Fish. Several other ongoing opportunities are available, including work at the Friendswood Public Library.

City of Pearland Animal Services aids animals and promotes pet adoptions in the Pearland area, provides education and promotes the benefits of spaying and neutering pets. The local center also provides support to residents during times of disaster, offers pet adoption services and hosts microchipping events.

Forgotten Angels has two Pearland locations—a resale shop and a cafe—benefiting people with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. The shop offers a variety of volunteer and community service opportunities, all working to help provide recreational, education and vocational opportunities for more than 100 individuals with special needs.

Gulf Coast Exotic Bird Sanctuary works to save the homeless parrots of Texas by creating a safe refuge. It also provides medical care for exotic animals displaced by natural disasters, rescued by humane societies or that are disabled.

Hope Village offers full-time residences for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Pet Hub Animal Rescue offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, as the organization works to rescue lost animals and provide care before locating and returning them back to their owners. RISE Mentoring is a program that provides mentors to students throughout Pearland ISD. Students are selected based on teacher and counselor recommendations and matched with an adult. Volunteers visit with mentees each week to provide support and inspire children as role models.

The Children’s Center provides advocacy, counseling and mentoring for abused, abandoned, trafficked, homeless and economically disadvantaged children.
