Hundreds of nonprofits and community organizations serve Brazoria and Galveston counties. This is a noncomprehensive list of area organizations in need of volunteers. Here are some ways to get involved and give back to the community this holiday season.

Adult Reading Center taps volunteer tutors to provide instruction to adults with limited literacy skills at no charge. The center needs volunteers to serve as tutors, administrative assistants, event volunteers, computer lab instruction coaches and committee members.

Bay Area Houston Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing. Habitat seeks volunteers who want to work hands-on to give back to their community. Volunteers donate their time and skills to build homes in Galveston County for the less fortunate. In addition to homebuilding, volunteers can help at the office or in the organization’s ReStore shop. Volunteers can also serve on committees.

Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County is part of a national organization that works with youth from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. Volunteers get involved through tutoring sessions, facilities projects and mentorship.

Brazoria County Children’s Alliance offers a variety of opportunities for those looking for volunteer work, including administrative and clerical duties, fundraising, building maintenance and special events. The Alliance for Children assists abused and neglected children by partnering with social service providers in Brazoria County.

805 Buchta Road, Angleton

Brazoria County Women’s Center was founded in 1982 in an effort to provide services to domestic violence victims. The Women’s Center offers volunteer opportunities at resale shops as well as
a supervised visitation program.

2335 N. Texas Ave., Pearland

Christian Helping Hands works to aid people in need through the cooperative effort of local churches. The organization runs a pantry and warehouse, sorting donated items and filling orders for clients. Several other events are offered as seasonal efforts, allowing for one-time volunteer opportunities.

City of Friendswood

City of Friendswood offers a variety of volunteer opportunities in order to support citizen participation in the community. In addition toplanning and preservation committees like Keep Friendswood Beautiful, the city is in need of same-day volunteers for events, such as the Fourth of July Festival and Kid Fish. Several other ongoing opportunities are available, including work at the Friendswood Public Library.

City of Pearland Animal Services aids animals and promotes pet adoptions in the Pearland area, provides education and promotes the benefits of spaying and neutering pets. The local center also provides support to residents during times of disaster, offers pet adoption services and hosts microchipping events.

2002 Old Alvin Road, Pearland

Forgotten Angels has two Pearland locations—a resale shop and a cafe—benefiting people with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. The shop offers a variety of volunteer and community service opportunities, all working to help provide recreational, education and vocational opportunities for more than 100 individuals with special needs.

Friendswood ISD Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports FISD through its grant programs and community events. Volunteers can become Friends of the Foundation at no cost in order to participate in fundraising events.

402 Laurel Drive, Friendswood

Golden Rule Services Inc. is a private, nonprofit agency that provides services, such as residential assistance, supervised living and nursing to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Golden Rule focuses on treating individuals with compassion while focusing on potentials and abilities.

3801 Liberty Drive, Pearland

Gulf Coast Exotic Bird Sanctuary works to save the homeless parrots of Texas by creating a safe refuge. It also provides medical care for exotic animals displaced by natural disasters, rescued by humane societies or that are disabled.

Hope Village offers full-time residences for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The organization offers volunteer opportunities, including helping residents with crafts that are available for purchase in the gift shop, serving as hosts in the Village Cafe or preparing items to be sold in the resale shop.

Hunt With Heart

Hunt with Heart is an organization striving to empower and enhance the lives of children battling life-altering or life-threatening illness. Theprogram offers outdoor activities to children and their families, that incorporate outdoor safety awareness and an appreciation of nature.

1118 N. Main St., Ste. 2J, Pearland

Keep Pearland Beautiful is an organization committed to promoting environmental responsibility in Pearland. Volunteers assist in a variety of programs, including litter prevention and cleanups, education and beautification.

5800 Magnolia St., Pearland

The Melvin Knapp Activity Center is a recreation facility for active adults 50 years of age and older. The facility is operated by the Pearland Parks and Recreation Department and offers a variety of low-cost programs, activities and classes to members.

2424 South Park Ave., Pearland

Pearland Neighborhood Center was developed in 1987 to create a multiservice center to address the needs of residents in Pearland. The goal of the center is to create a one-stop shop to provide a variety of social services in a single place.

2335 N. Texas Ave., Pearland

Pet Hub Animal Rescue offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, as the organization works to rescue lost animals and provide care before locating and returning them back to their owners. Volunteer options include fundraising, volunteer coordination, event planning, fostering and clerical duties.

RISE Mentoring is a program that provides mentors to students throughout Pearland ISD. Students are selected based on teacher and counselor recommendations and matched with an adult. Volunteers visit with mentees each week to provide support and inspire children as role models.

1928 N. Main St., Pearland

Serenity Garden is a family-owned and -operated assisted-living facility that specializes in caring for people with memory impairments, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Lewy-Body dementia. The live-in facility offers three daily meals, supervision of medication and 24-hour staffing.

118 W. Willowick Ave., Friendswood

Soleana Stables, an organization committed to providing therapeutic riding and affiliated with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, including administrative support, side walking, committee membership and ranch chores.

19200 McKay Road, Alvin

The Children’s Center provides advocacy, counseling and mentoring for abused, abandoned, trafficked, homeless and economically disadvantaged children. Volunteers work directly or indirectly with children through support programs, including outreach, transitional housing, emergency shelters, mentorship, career preparation, job shadowing and academic support.
