Two streets in Pearland were renamed to honor the late David Wagner, former CEO of HCA Healthcare Pearland.
What you need to know
Pearland City Council voted unanimously to rename Medical Center Drive to David Wagner Way and Marketplace Boulevard to HCA Healthcare Boulevard at its March 10 meeting.
Wagner died on Aug. 23, according to his obituary, and was remembered for “his welcoming and inquisitive nature, sharp business acumen, service to others, and love for his family, friends and community.”
HCA Healthcare Pearland initially sought to rename an internal roadway Wagner Way, which wouldn’t require city approval, but the city suggested renaming Medical Center Drive.
“I asked them to rename Medical Center Drive David to Wagner Way so 20 years from now, someone would want to know who David Wagner is,” Mayor Kevin Cole said.
What else?
Jim Johnson, president of the Pearland Chamber of Commerce, spoke in support of renaming the streets.
Wagner served on the chamber’s board of directors for two terms and was the vice chair of the cultivate talent committee when he passed away, Johnson said.
Cole asked city staff to create a street sign to mark David Wagner Way in the next two weeks.
“David was just one of those quiet giants,” Cole said. “He told you he was going to do something, he just did it.”
