The city of Pearland will host its second annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 15 at Independence Park, after Pearland City Council granted organizers a permit on May 20 to host it.

The Juneteenth celebration commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, and celebrates the rich heritage and culture of the African American community, according to agenda documents.

The family-friendly festival approved by the city will take place at Independence Park on June 15 from 6-10 p.m.

The festival will feature live entertainment, an appearance from Houston hip-hop rapper Bun B, presentations from community leaders, children’s entertainment and various food vendors, according to agenda documents.


Event planners expect to attract up to 15,000 attendees on June 15 at Independence Park, according to agenda documents.

Prior to the celebration at Independence Park, Juneteenth celebration festivities will begin with “Juneteenth is LIT” on June 14 at Lit Java Coffee & Books, 5018 Broadway St., Pearland, at 6 p.m., followed by “Juneteenth Celebration Kickback” at BB’s Tex-Orleans, 9719 Broadway St., Pearland, at 9 p.m.

Following the Independence Park event, the celebration continues on June 16 with a gospel service at Silverlake Church, 1865 Cullen Blvd., Pearland, at 10 a.m. The Juneteenth Celebration will culminate in the Juneteenth Wave of Freedom Mixer on June 19 at KNP Social, 11720 Broadway St., Ste. 102, Pearland, at 6 p.m.
