Mayor Tom Reid has announced that he will not seek re-election in May 2020 after serving as mayor for nearly 44 years, according to a press release from the city of Pearland.

“I love what I do, being mayor, serving the community and making the community something special,” Mayor Reid said in a press release. “But I think it’s time to now end this chapter and focus more on spending quality time with friends and family.”

Reid made his career in the area working at the Johnson Space Center. He was elected as a Pearland council member in 1973 and served his first term as mayor from 1978 to 1990, according to the city’s press release. His second term as mayor began in 1993 and has continued since, according to the city’s press release.

Pearland’s population has grown rapidly over the time Reid has served as mayor. Reid was also instrumental in different endeavors in Pearland, including bringing a University of Houston-Clear Lake campus to Pearland.

“Pearland wouldn’t be what it is today without the vision, tenacity, and energy of Mayor Reid. He set the tone for this great community. The impacts of his legacy will continue to permeate the community forever,” Pearland City Manager Clay Pearson said in a press release.
