Pearland ISD is applying for a truancy prevention grant to support high school students who have five or more absences by providing intervention before the student is considered truant and referred to Truancy Court.

The overview

PISD is applying through the Houston-Galveston Area Council, or H-GAC, a local government regional organization, according to district documents.

The PISD board of trustees approved Donna Tate, PISD’s federal programs and grants administrator, to be the authorized official for the grant at its Feb. 11 meeting.

If awarded, the grant funds will cover all costs associated with contracting services for the case management of high school students with five or more absences, and provide intervention supports for the upcoming 2025-26 school year.

The application costs nearly $70,000, which will be paid for with the district’s grant funds, according to district documents.

Diving in deeper

The case management contract is expected to go to Community in Schools, or CIS, a nonprofit student support organization, which will provide the program for Pearland High School, according to district documents.

While there isn’t a requirement for district matching costs for the 2025-26 school year, it is not known if other grants will follow, or if any of those future grants would have matching costs requirements, district documents note.

If the grant is awarded, it will run from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2026, according to district documents.
