The tornadoes that swept through the Greater Houston area on Dec. 28 caused significant damage to Walt Disney Elementary in Alvin ISD, and now school district leaders are spearheading recovery efforts.

The backstory

On Dec. 28, an EF-2 tornado brought winds of 125 miles per hour to the Alvin area and caused substantial damage to Walt Disney Elementary, according to the Pearland Chamber of Commerce.

What you need to know

Alvin ISD will host a school supply drive to gather essential items, according to the chamber.


The dropoff locations are at Old Alvin Primary School, 2200 Westpark Drive, Alvin, during the following times:
  • 1-4 p.m. Dec. 31
  • 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Jan. 1
  • 8 a.m.-noon Jan. 2
Mayor Kevin Cole will also hold a supply drive at Pearland City Hall, 3519 Liberty Drive, Pearland during the following times:
  • 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 3
  • 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 4
