After Hurricane Beryl made landfall July 8, school districts closed throughout the Greater Houston area, including Alvin, Friendswood and Pearland ISDs.

While the three school districts have reopened, some may have to extend summer school dates to make up for the closures.

The gist

AISD closed July 8-10 due to Hurricane Beryl and reopened July 11, according to multiple social media posts from the district.

Although the district reopened, a July 10 Facebook post from the district noted summer school, extracurricular activities and professional development would be closed after reopening due to ongoing power outages in several buildings.

AISD had the second session for initial credit or credit recovery, which was only available by appointment, scheduled for July 8-18, according to the district’s website. Information on whether the session will be extended was not immediately available as of press time.

What else?

PISD remained closed until July 15, according to a social media post from the district.

PISD also had the second session for multiple summer school programs, including special education extended school year services, or ESY, scheduled for elementary, junior and high school from July 8-18, as well as high school credit recovery from June 24-July 11, according to the district’s website.

PISD’s Executive Communications Director Sundie Dahlkamp said in a July 15 email the second session of the special education ESY sessions have restarted, and the district will soon determine if the program can be extended until July 25.

Dahlkamp also noted the high school credit recovery session was completed and will not be extended.

Also of note

Friendswood ISD also closed July 8-10 due to Hurricane Beryl, according to multiple social media posts from the district.

Summer school and summer program dates for FISD ran during June. However, individual sponsors of any programs were left to choose to cancel or hold camps following the storm, FISD communication specialist Kelsey Golz said in a July 15 email.
