The Alvin ISD Education Foundation in February hosted the Turtle Race to raise money for scholarships and grants, and created a new campus-wide book project, according to a pair of news releases from the district.

The gist

On Feb. 10, the AISD community adopted over 13,000 turtles to race down Mustang Bayou as part of its Turtle Race Fun Run. Adopters of the first 13 turtles to cross the finish line, as well as the adopter of the last-place turtle, received prizes, such as a $1,500 travel voucher, a $500 Visa gift card, and a 65-inch TV, according to the news release.

Over 740 runners participated in the Turtle Race Fun Run, and 40 vendors were in attendance, according to the news release. Through these events, the AISD Education Foundation has raised over $140,000 for both Innovative Teaching Grants, and student and teacher scholarships.

The Innovative Teaching Grants are designed to “encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative instructional approaches that accomplish program objectives,” according to the AISD Education Foundation’s website.

What else?

Students at Nichols Mock Elementary School are now participating in “One School, One Book,” which is a campus-wide book project where every student will read J. Dillard’s “J.D. and the Great Barber Battle,” according to the news release.

This project is from the first campus grant given out by the AISD Education Foundation. The decision to start the book project was decided by Nichols Mock Elementary School administrators and teachers, according to the news release.

An audiobook is also available for students to listen to at home, with a mystery reader from Nichols Mock Elementary School for each chapter, Nichols Mock Librarian Kate Hebert said in the news release.

What they said

“We wanted our first campus grant from the Alvin ISD Education Foundation to be used for a project that would really speak to the core beliefs and values of our school,” Nichols Mock Principal Sandy Holdsclaw said in the news release. “We wanted to highlight the importance of reading and at the same time build community.”
